Perma-Grit Tools TOOL TIP! For shaping and sanding foam, glass and especially SuperFil we've found that nothing beats the ingenious tools from Perma-Grit. These tungsten carbide shapers come in plenty of different styles and shapes, and they cut like crazy and last forever. Check out their website at http://permagrit.com and see what we mean.

See the SuperFil page for more information about SuperFil.

UV Smooth Prime is a high-solids waterborne primer designed to give an ultra-smooth finish. It fills any tiny imperfections in the SuperFil or the composite surface. It's made of a proprietary waterborne urethane that is thinned with water, and it's completely safe to roll or spray with no fumes or flammability worries. UV Smooth Prime was made to be sanded, and it's easily cut with all grades of paper. UV Smooth Prime contains non-metallic UV blockers that do not interfere with embedded antennas.

Topcoat Paint -- Two Great Choices!

You can choose Top Gloss, our waterborne non-hazardous polyurethane paint, or Aero-Thane, our standard two-part solventborne polyurethane.

Top Gloss, our new waterborne topcoat paint, is a cross-linked polyurethane that also dries to a high-gloss, wet-look finish. Top Gloss requires no special precautions when being sprayed and cleans up with plain water.

Like UV Smooth Prime, Top Gloss is crosslinked to provide a tough, high-gloss protective finish that delivers years of exceptional performance.

Top Gloss is nonflammable, free of solvent odors, completely fuel and chemical resistant, and shipped as non-HAZMAT. Top Gloss is available in 50 colors.

Aero-Thane was developed by Poly-Fiber over 25 years ago as a super-flexible polyurethane to apply over aircraft fabric. It is a wet-look, high-gloss, two-part urethane that is much more flexible than automotive urethanes and those designed for painting metal. Aero-Thane covers composites and metal equally well, and is fuel and chemical resistant. Like all conventional urethanes, Aero-Thane requires a fresh-air source respirator and strict safety precautions when being sprayed.

Apply SuperFil

Mix by weight, 2 parts A to 1 part B. Blend thoroughly. Spread SuperFil with a squeegee. Fill any surface weave pattern to an even depth. Power or hand sand until reaching desired shape and smoothness. Spot-fill voids or irregularities with more SuperFil, and sand. Try the Perma-Grit tools here. Wear a dust mask or respirator when sanding.

Roll or Spray on UV Smooth Prime

Thoroughly wash the sanded SuperFil surface. Try our 310 Cleaner. Wipe with our Prep Wipe for final clean up. Stir Smooth Prime until all solids are back in suspension. Roll on about six coats of unthinned crosslinked UV Smooth Prime. Sand only the final coat. You may also spray on UV Smooth Prime as needed for an ultra-smooth prime finish.

UV Smooth Prime sticks like crazy to everything, including the inside of your gun. If you spray, wash your gun and flush thoroughly with Gun Cleaner immediately after spraying.

Apply Topcoat Paint

IF YOU'RE USING TOP GLOSS:
Clean the primed surface. Wipe the surface with our special Prep Wipe. Stir the paint thoroughly. Use Top Gloss right out of the can without thinning. Spray three coats, allowing at least six hours drying time between coats. Need to speed the drying? Bring your sprayed parts into the house! There are no fumes or flammability danger! Buff to a dazzling finish that's physically tough and chemically resistant.

IF YOU'RE USING AERO-THANE:
Follow the directions supplied with the paint. Add U-865 catalyst, then reduce with UE-820 reducer. Aero-Thane is best sprayed in light coats. The first coat should be only a light mist that results in little color and no gloss. Apply another coat to add more color and fill. Spray a third coat for final gloss and coverage. Aero-Thane is formulated to stay flexible and crack resistant for years.

We're constantly developing and real-world testing new products for you, the homebuilder and restorer. This system of composite finishing cuts down the number of steps and takes a lot of the guesswork out of putting that air show finish on your airplane. If you can handle a squeegee, a roller, and a spray gun, you can do this yourself.
